Mini LED and Micro LED: what is the different?

Micro LED and Mini LED are both based on Light Emitting Diode (LED) technology, but they are used in different ways for LCD and LED displays, respectively.

Micro LED

Micro LED refers to the use of smaller LED beads than the general size. This allows for more bulbs within the same area, resulting in higher resolution compared to traditional LED displays.

The technology was first commercialized by Sony in 2012 and has since become more affordable. Micro LED displays are known for their high brightness, long lifespan, and compatibility with flexible and transparent display applications.

They offer extremely high contrast and brightness, making them ideal for high-resolution AR and VR displays, although manufacturing yields are still a challenge due to the small chip size .

Mini LED

Mini LED is a special kind of backlight design for LCD displays. It divides the backlight into multiple zones, each of which can independently adjust its brightness based on the content displayed on the LCD.

This technology improves the color performance and contrast ratio of the display while also reducing power consumption. Mini LED displays are becoming the go-to choice for high-end applications such as gaming monitors, automotive displays, and professional monitors due to their ability to provide deeper blacks and more precise lighting compared to traditional LED-backlit LCDs .

Comparison and Applications

Both technologies offer significant advantages over traditional displays. Micro LED provides perfect contrast and brightness but is still expensive to manufacture, limiting its mass adoption.

Mini LED, on the other hand, offers a balance between affordability and high performance, making it a commercially viable option. While OLED displays offer infinite contrast, they suffer from burn-in issues and lower brightness. Mini LED outperforms OLED in terms of higher brightness, no burn-in risk, and better cost efficiency, making it ideal for various applications .

In summary, Micro LED and Mini LED technologies are advancing rapidly, each with their own strengths and applications. As the technology matures and costs decrease, these displays are expected to become more widespread in the market .
